Our team standing in front of the finished quilt top.
This Saturday I went to Capital Quilters, one of the quilting groups that I belong to. In place of the usual meeting the committee had decided that we would spend the meeting making charity quilt tops, using Jelly Rolls. The idea was to make the event fun and have a bit of healthy competition thrown in. Seven teams of three worked on quilt tops and most completed them in the two hours. One team even came all dressed up in their PJs and mop caps!
A few of us drive over the Rimutaka Hill from the Wairarapa to Lower Hutt each month for the meeting, and on the way we usually stop for a bite of lunch. So it was over lunch that we firmed up our plans for our quilt top. Pam brought a notebook with some sketches in, and with great foresight she had brought along some fusible web, Lyn had remembered her cutter, mat and sewing supplies and I brought the machine and Sew Ezi table. We were all set and ready to compete!
Most of the teams made 'jelly roll race' quilts, sewing all the ends together to make one long strip and then folding and sewing until you have a quilt top. They all added their own twist, some appliqueing shapes over the top, and some inserting pieces in between the strips. One team was working on a really interesting alternative pattern. It's not finished yet but hopefully we will see it at the next meeting. How great to see all that creativity at work even under all the pressure!
Here are some of the quilt tops:
Made with a Moda William Morris jelly roll
This one was another Moda jelly roll, with lovely little boats appliqued on top
Pretty colours in this Batik quilt
Hard to see with the light shining behind but can you spot the cats on this one?
And finally, our quilt. We did ours by sewing the strips together on the long sides, then chopping the quilt up and inserting a strip of brown. Then we appliqued a tree on top. The French General jelly roll we had was perfect, as there were five brown strips that we took out for the vertical strip and appliques. Thank to Lyn for non stop sewing and Pam for pressing, while I hovered around trying to be organised!
Most of the jelly rolls were donated by Tiffanies Treasures, and one from Quilters' Lane. What a great way to get some charity quilts done! Thanks to the Capital Quilters committee for making it such a fun day.
